This is not a language school

Portuguese for Freaks & Lovers started back in 2024, in the back room of a bar in Lisbon, with a couple of owls and a handwritten grammar sheet. It is still that, mostly.

From 2025, we have decided to come forth from the shadows of the underworld, and give this project and this lovingly freak community more visibility and growth.

Learning a language is not always smooth sailing, and a romance language sometimes feels more like heartbreak than romance. But that's part of the journey. We are here to make it fun, interesting and engaging. Our sessions are hosted in unconventional spaces, such as galleries, studios, restaurants the hour before they open, gardens on a sunny day, bars and occupied tree branches. And although the latter is a lie, everything else is true about it and we work hard to make your time valued.

Students are handed material that was carefully written for their session, and are guided through the topic and put to work with the group or a colleague.

It's always 1 hour session which ends with an open invitation to whoever wants to stay and have a one-on-one casual talk time.
